The incident is also triggering a wider inspection of similar ceilings across the city.

Nobody was hurt in Tuesday’s accident, which involved the collapse of part of a gypsum-made ceiling of Phan Dinh Phung Sports Hall.

The inquiry will be carried out by the city’s construction department and other agencies. In a dispatch to the HCM City People’s Committee, construction minister Trinh Dinh Dung reminded the designated agencies to pay special attention to the stability of the structure, suspended ceiling details and the quality of the roof.

He also proposed that the city’s construction department should be asked to examine the quality of all suspended roof structures at public buildings in the city to ensure that they are safe.
