ISG secures Bradford school modernisation scheme

16 Sep 10 ISG has commenced work on a £1.5 million project for the City of Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council to comprehensively modernise and upgrade facilities at Lapage Primary School.

The project is being carefully phased to enable the school to remain fully operational throughout the duration of the improvement works.

Over the summer holiday period, ISG has been carrying out a substantial re-roofing exercise at the school. The contractor has removed the existing tiles, installed high performance composite insulation panels and then re-tiled the roof to enhance the thermal efficiency of the building.

Three single storey extensions will also be constructed to create additional classroom and teaching capacity, provide an enlarged staff room and a more accessible entrance with new reception area. The creation of this additional teaching space will then enable ISG to carry out a phased programme of refurbishment within the existing school building.

New suspended ceilings and efficient lighting systems will be installed, rooms redecorated and carpets replaced as part of this rolling modernisation programme. Welfare facilities will also be upgraded and glass carefully removed from existing window units and replaced with modern, high performance glazing to reduce heat loss. The main project is due for completion in spring 2011, with the final elements of re-roofing work scheduled to take place a few months later, during the summer holidays, to minimise disruption to staff and pupils.

John Gittins, ISG's regional managing director, commented: "The indefinite postponement of many high profile new build education schemes presents a challenge for many local authorities as they look to deliver 21st century learning environments in an age of austerity. Schools will have to look at ways of modernising existing facilities instead of adopting more costly re-build solutions, and those contractors able to demonstrate strong credentials delivering live environment, phased refurbishment schemes are well placed to secure an increasing share of this market.”
