ISG stacks shipping containers with second docks scheme at Portishead

13 Mar 12 ISG has won a project to construct a new Hall & Woodhouse pub-restaurant and marina club house at the prestigious Port Marine waterfront development in Portishead, Somerset.

Part of the new development will be built using shipping containers, bolted together to provide an innovative off site construction solution and a uniquely maritime architectural statement.

The project is ISG’s second at the docks, which is undergoing a major redevelopment, and sees the contractor build the pub-restaurant and clubhouse on a site adjacent to the £4.5 million residential scheme that the contractor has been constructing for Charles Church since December. The development is ISG’s first for the Dorset-based Hall & Woodhouse independent brewery, which has a network of more than 250 pub outlets.

The marina club house area of the building, which will be let to marina management company Quay Marina, will be a three-storey structure built using 28 shipping containers. The containers will be modified and partially fitted out to enhance the speed of installation before being delivered to site and bolted together by ISG. The club house will operate 24/7 to provide services to boats and crews entering the marina and the fit out will include staff accommodation and lounge areas, toilets and showers.

The more conventional two-storey pub-restaurant element of the build will be constructed on traditional piled foundations and a concrete deck. Featuring a steel frame and making extensive use of curtain walling to maximise views of the marina, the pub and bar area will be located at ground floor level, with an open plan restaurant and kitchen across the first floor.

The building has also been future proofed through a clever design that enables a further three-storeys to be added above the restaurant should planning permission be granted for a hotel at the site. Externally, ISG will create decked areas, a car park and a range of hard and soft landscaping finishes. The design for the building includes a tensile fabric canopy structure enabling alfresco dining all year round and there is also a terraced ground floor bar area.

ISG’s John Rawlinson, managing director - South West, commented: “It is great to be part of the vibrant redevelopment plans in Port Marine, especially landing two projects in quick succession, which will really help build a community at the marina. This latest project mixes traditional and innovative construction technology to create a striking new building that symbolises a new era for Portishead’s historic docks, drawing on its maritime traditions and adding a contemporary narrative.”
