Kier wins Kent University library upgrade

21 Aug 13 Kier Construction has won an £18m contract to extend, refurbish and modernise the Templeman Library library at the University of Kent.

The library has been at the heart of the university’s campus in Canterbury campus since it first opened in 1965. The £18m facelift will see Kier working closely with architects Penoyre & Prasad to provide a five-floor extension to the existing library, and extensive refurbishment of the original building.

The five-floor extension will create 5,200m2 of additional space, including a new-climate controlled basement.

Internal areas will be completely remodelled and refurbished with an emphasis on creating a light-filled and airy environment.

There project also includes external hard and soft landscaping, including a lawn entrance to the south of the building,

Work is due start on site imminently with construction of the extension and the first phase of the refurbishment due for completion in September 2014, and the main works programmed for completion at the end 2015.
