Labourer run over by road roller he was operating

26 Jul 16 A building labourer working on an industrial estate near Halifax had his legs crushed when a three-tonne road roller he was operating escaped his control.

The 26-year-old worker sustained several breaks to his right leg tibia and fibula bones along with burns to his right hand and an open fracture of the index finger on the same hand when the vibrating roller he was using slid down a steep incline and pinned him beneath it.

The incident occurred in November 2015 at Quantum Exhibitions & Displays Ltd in Hipperholme. The company has now been fined £70,000 by Calderdale Magistrates Court for safety breaches.

After the hearing, HSE inspector Jacqueline Ferguson commented: “There was no vehicle restraint or edge protection system in place to prevent vehicles from approaching the unstable edge of the embankment with the foreseeable risk of the vehicle overturning. This was a serious accident that could have proved fatal.”
