Leighton team agrees details for $900m Perth road scheme

6 Aug 13 Leighton Contractors has reached agreement on the price, scope and construction methodology for the Gateway Western Australia (WA) Perth Airport and freight access project.

The contract cost target agreed between Leighton’s Gateway WA Alliance and client Main Roads WA is valued at AU$899m (£522m) of which Leighton Contractors has a 68% share.

Leighton Holdings chief executive officer Hamish Tyrwhitt said: “This award, of more than $600 million, demonstrates the strength of the Leighton Group in the civil infrastructure market, being one of two major wins in roads and rail in the past week alone. It also underscores the resilience of our diverse portfolio.

“The project itself is an important initiative for Western Australia and an indication of the pipeline of opportunities we expect to emerge over the next few years, as this nation moves to close its infrastructure deficit and improve productivity.”

The Gateway WA Alliance includes Leighton Contractors and partners Georgiou, GHD, Aecom and BG&E. It was awarded the Perth Airport and freight access project by competitive tender in November 2012. The Gateway WA project will improve the road network around Perth Airport and the nearby Kewdale and Forrestfield industrial estates. Features include extra lanes on Tonkin Highway, new interchanges and the upgrade of Leach Highway to an expressway.

Project completion is scheduled for early 2017, ahead of the planned expansion and consolidation of the Perth airport terminals.

To date the Gateway WA Alliance has focused on detailed pricing, planning, design and early works packages.
