Work to construct the new four-storey facility, which will house 8,542m2 of clinical and community space, began in April and is scheduled to complete in spring 2015.

Mansell was appointed through the Liftco framework.

The new QEII hospital will provide a local A&E, outpatient, diagnostic and therapy services.

To ensure existing healthcare services remain unaffected by construction works, the new facility is being constructed alongside the existing operational QEII Hospital.  Once complete, healthcare services will be transferred to the new QEII hospital. The remainder of the site will be disposed of by East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

The design includes solar panels, a green roof, air source heat pumps and the use of natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption to achieve BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating.
