She will be replaced from 12th December by former Cable & Wireless and British Gas boss Phil Bentley.

Baroness McGregor-Smith has been a director of Mitie since December 2002 and has been chief executive since April 2007. She has attracted both positive and negative headlines – the Financial Times has dubbed her the ‘the prickly peer’ – but, as Mite chairman Roger Matthews pointed out, since becoming CEO, she has doubled revenue and profits.

Her successor Phil Bentley was chief executive of Cable & Wireless Communications from January 2014 to May 2016 until its sale to Liberty Global. For the previous seven years he was managing director of British Gas.
