Melbourne tenders early works for multi-billion-dollar metro

24 Nov 15 The first package of works on the Melbourne Metro Rail project in Australia will go to the market tomorrow, with construction set to start in just over a year.

The multi-billion-dollar scheme is the biggest public transport infrastructure project in the history of the state of Victoria.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined minister for public transport Jacinta Allan to announce the early works package, which will deliver critical works worth hundreds of millions of dollars to prepare key sites for the start of major construction in 2018.

Works will include moving and protecting underground services and the relocation of trees and other road features to enable to the construction sites to be established. Minor road and tram diversions will also be put in place to enable early works to be carried out.

Melbourne Metro Rail is designed to transform the city’s rail network into an international-style underground metro system that can carry 20,000 extra passengers in peak hour. The scheme – which includes two 9km tunnels and five new stations – will be built through a public-private partnership.

The early works documentation will be released on 25 November and will be available on the Victorian Government Tenders website: www.tenders.vic.gov.au. Applications close on 23 December 2015.
