More than £1bn of public construction has stalled

24 Jun 13 An analysis of planned public sector construction projects has found that 119 of them, worth more than £1.1bn, are on hold.

The Glenigan Construction Pipeline Analysis Report has identified stalled plans that include hospital developments, care homes, housing, schools and other community services across the UK.

The biggest project on hold is a £200m housing and office development planned for Preston.

Plans worth £116.6m for the redevelopment of Southend University Hospital are also on the shelf.

Other projects on hold include a £65m care village in Ringwood, Hampshire, a £60m ‘justice centre’ in Sunderland and £50m of health  projects in High Wycombe for Buckinghamshire NHS Trust.

However, the chancellor of the exchequer is widely expected to unveil a huge boost for construction when he publishes his spending plans this week. Lobby journalists have been briefed that spending on housing and transport will be increased substantially in an attempt to kick-start economic growth.
