The revamped building will house a theatre and music facilities, a multimedia suite for the student newspaper and radio station, and a headquarters for student societies. The building will remain in use while work is going on.
The construction works will include the installation of a new ground to ceiling glazed entrance and partial glazed east and west façade. A café and shop units will also be added.
This is Morrison’s eighth contract in 10 years at the university, totalling almost £60m.
Mike Bruce, regional director for Morrison Construction’s northeast business, said: “We are pleased to have this opportunity to build on our association with the University and play a key role, working with our project partners to redevelop this important facility for the student body.
“When complete it will provide exceptional facilities befitting a university which is ranked one of the best in the UK.”
Work is now underway with completion scheduled for October 2015.
