Mott MacDonald picked to design Russian outlet village

29 Nov 13 Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Hines International and Espro/Aton as designer for the first phase of an outlet village and retail park in Moscow, Russia.

The new Kievsky retail park will be located adjacent to Vnukovo Airport and serve the surrounding residential neighbourhoods as well as the recently expanded Moscow city boundaries. A 39,000m2 outlet village will be designed in a southern European style, with pedestrian streets, open piazzas, and landscaping to attract large international branded stores.

The 50,000m2 retail park is intended for high-end home improvement stores and supermarkets. Architectural firm Hydea produced the masterplan and architectural proposal for the project.

Mott MacDonald will provide full engineering design and life-cycle cost management services on the project and will also monitor site construction and fit-out works by tenants post-construction. Sustainability will form a key part of the development’s design, with Hines International and Espro-Aton keen to achieve the highest BREEAM rating possible. Building materials that provide the best thermal insulation will be used, while public transport will be offered to the retail centre to minimise the carbon footprint of consumers.

Paul Friday, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “Mott MacDonald’s appointment on this project is a reflection of the great work we undertook in designing Hines International’s first village development, Belaya Dacha Outlet Village in the south east of Moscow. Our open partnership approach to design, our willingness to introduce innovation and emphasise on sustainability were key factors in securing this work.”

Construction of the first phase of the Outlet Village Kievsky & Retail Park is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2015. Further retail, entertainment and commercial office components are planned over an additional four phases.
