NCC is also performing well above the national average for achievement rates for Key and Functional Skills. Last year, 86% of all apprentices who commenced training at the College achieved their Key and Functional Skills, compared to 76% nationally. The Key and Functional Skills element is an essential part of the apprenticeship framework, providing learners with the literacy and numeracy skills to work in Construction and the Built Environment.
In addition to the 428 apprentices who completed their college training during the year, the college also helped over 100 learners to achieve success in either literacy or numeracy in the national tests.
Andy Walder, Director of the National Construction College, said: “We are extremely proud of the results and all the students who passed their Key and Functional Skills, it is a great achievement that nearly all finishers passed this element of their training.
“It is not only testament to the students’ hard work, but also their instructors who do such a great job here at the College to ensure students receive first-class training and have the skills that they need for a successful career in the industry.”
Adam Vero, who works for NR11 Groundworks and Civil Engineering, was one of the students who passed his Key and Functional Skills with flying colours and won the Key Skills Award at the College’s annual awards this year. Adam said: “I have really enjoyed my time at the College, passing the Key and Functional Skills element of the course means that I have the skills to not only carry out my trade, but also have a good understanding of other skills required in the workplace.”
Adam’s employer, Russell Mower, from NR11 Groundworks and Civil Engineering, said: “The Key and Functional Skills element of the apprentices’ training is really important, it ensures that they have a good platform to work from and have the literacy and numeracy skills that are required on the job, as well as all the skills for their given trade.
“Adam in particular has really benefitted from this element of the training, as it has given him the confidence he needs in all aspects of his work. It is great to know that the College are doing so well with this important part of the training.”
As the direct training division of CITB-ConstructionSkills, the National Construction College offers outstanding training to both young apprentices and adult students for a wide range of specialist courses, which are delivered by experienced instructors at first class training facilities. The College’s seven campuses across the UK provide training for up to 30,000 people per year.
