Dr Miles Watkins has spent the past 17 years with materials supplier Aggregate Industries, latterly as director of sustainable construction.
Dr Watkins is a founding member of the UK Green Building Council and continues to be one of its ambassadors. He is also chairman of the Institute of Quarrying and non-executive chairman at Care for the Wild International.
His role at BRE is to formulate commercial strategies that will strengthen its presence in the UK and overseas.
BRE chief executive Dr Peter Bonfield said: "‘Miles brings with him a wealth of knowledge across all areas of the construction supply chain as well as invaluable experience of leading on sustainability work. He is a well-known and much respected name in the sector, and he will be a great asset to BRE."
