New senior appointment to the Yorkon management team

21 May 10 Award-winning off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has made a new senior appointment to further strengthen its management team.

Award-winning off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has made a new senior appointment to further strengthen its management team.

With around 40 years’ experience in the construction industry, Ken Smith has been appointed Operations Manager.  He now heads up one of two teams responsible for off-site projects in both the public and private sectors, with a particular emphasis on healthcare.  He will oversee schemes from contract award through to construction and handover.

His previous role with Yorkon was as Project Manager for the past two years, during which time he managed the off-site construction of a new treatment centre in Bristol.  The project for independent healthcare providers UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH) is believed to be the largest ever complete hospital to be built off site, and was successfully handed over on time and on budget.

A civil and structural engineer by training, his other roles have included a project engineer with the Portakabin Group where he was involved in the development of the Yorkon building system; operations management for a clean room components business, and contracts manager for MSS Clean Technology.

Commenting on this new appointment, David Johnson, Director and General Manager of Yorkon said, “Demand for our services continues to grow, particularly in the health and retail sectors, and in projects for the UK’s leading main contractors.  Our off-site solutions can help deliver higher quality facilities to tight timescales, on difficult and constrained sites, with greatly reduced disruption, improved sustainability, and much less risk for the client.”

He added, “This new appointment, which follows a retirement, will further strengthen our management team.  We are committed to delivering every project on budget and on time – and the fact that 99 per cent of our contracts have been completed on programme and on cost over the last two years, is further evidence of our unrivalled track record.”

Yorkon’s current projects include a £10m contract for Kier Eastern at Colchester General Hospital, and projects for Interserve, Laing O’Rourke, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Yorkon is part of the Shepherd Group – one of Europe’s largest privately owned businesses in the construction sector – and a subsidiary of Portakabin.  Established in 1980, Yorkon is now the UK’s leading off-site specialist and has pioneered innovative building solutions in some of the most challenging situations and in sectors as diverse as supermarkets, offices, hospitals, airports, restaurants and schools.
