Two are for the University of Sunderland and one is for Marshall Aerospace & Defence Group.

The University of Sunderland projects are being delivered as part of a 36-month major capital contractor framework, won exclusively by Clugston earlier in the year. With the first project, involving the refurbishment of the Sciences Complex under way, the go ahead has just been given for a second contract, to develop a Centre for Enterprise & Innovation.

The £3.8m Sciences Complex will provide new laboratories, research facilities, a hospital training ward, point of care centre, a high-fidelity simulation suite, examination rooms, a pharmacy, teaching hubs, training rooms, seminar rooms and staff offices.

The £7m Centre for Enterprise & Innovation, which will be part refurbishment of a Grade II listed building and part new build, will provide modern laboratory, workshop and office space for new and existing businesses, particularly in the sectors of advanced manufacturing, health, sciences and the creative industries.

This building will also accommodate the University’s Enterprise Place, a business incubator for graduate and student businesses, in addition to conference facilities.

Clugston has also secured a £2.2m design and build contract to redevelop the office and manufacturing facilities of Marshall Advanced Composites at Kirkbymoorside. Clugston will refurbish, remodel and fit-out a large open plan office space, along with external infrastructure development. Work includes the construction of a new glazed atrium to provide a reception area and visitors centre.

Andy Mackintosh, Clugston Construction’s newly appointed regional business manager for the Northeast, said, “We are really pleased to be working on three projects from the North East office. As a local business, employing local people, we are excited to be working for such well-known organisations and keen to add value to the process.”
