Nuclear waste commission renewed for Parsons Brinckerhoff team

20 May 15 A WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff consortium has won a new four-year contract to provide specialist nuclear services to Radioactive Waste Management Ltd (RWM) and its parent organisation, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff will work on decommissioning activities across a number of the UK’s nuclear sites. It will provide engineering design, environmental assessments and site characterisation services to support the development of a UK geological disposal facility (GDF). It will also provide support services in the areas of R&D, decommissioning and disposability assessments.

WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff’s work will be undertaken through its continued involvement with the Orchid Group which was originally formed in 2005 to bring together expertise from across industry to meet the needs of RWM.  Other partners of the group include Nuvia, Gardiner & Theobald, National Nuclear Laboratory, Galson Sciences and the British Geological Survey.

RWM is the developer of an underground dump for the UK’s most toxic radioactive waste. The location has yet to be selected but it will be a multi-billion pound engineering challenge to safely and securely build and operate the deep underground disposal facility that will keep the spent fuel buried for 100 years.
