Philippines kicks-off construction of 23km MRT line

21 Apr 16 Construction of Metro Rail Transit Line 7 is now under way in the Philippines following a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday.

The MRT-7 line will serve areas in the north, including Quezon City, Caloocan City and Bulacan.

The P69.30bn project includes the development of a 23km railway system with 14 stations from North Avenue, Quezon City to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. It is due to come into operation by April 2020 and is expected to carry 350,000 passengers a day initially and shorten travel time from the current 3.5 hours by road to one hour.

Further upgrades are planned that will ultimately enable it to carry 800,000 passengers per day.

The project involves the development of an integrated transportation system, which also includes a 22km highway and an intermodal transport terminal.
