Ramboll design unveiled for Qatar stadium

24 Apr 15 The organiser of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar has unveiled the design of the fifth proposed venue, Al Rayyan Stadium.

It will be built on the site of Al Rayyan Sports Club’s former stadium, which has been taken down for recycling by a team including UK-based Buckingham Group Contracting.

The Al Rayyan stadium design is being undertaken by Ramboll and Pattern. Aecom is project manager for the stadium.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) said that in tournament mode, the stadium will have a capacity of 40,000 spectators to be able to host group stage, round-of-16 and quarter-finals matches. After the tournament the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to 21,000 in legacy mode with the upper tier of seats being removed and sent to developing nations in need of sports infrastructure.

The stadium will feature the cooling technology and a façade design than incorporates a multitude of local patterns and designs, which draw on Qatari culture.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design, beginning with the deconstruction of the old stadium, with 90% of the materials being reused. Early works and deconstruction: were carried out by Manco International General Contracting, a joint venture between Manco and Buckingham Group Contracting. Some of the materials will be used by local and international artists to create works of public art which reflect the history of Al Rayyan Sports Club.
