Roofers fined after teenager’s fall

Magistrates have ordered a Stoke-on-Trent roofing contractor to pay more than £20,000 in fines and costs after a 16-year-old worker fell through a skylight.

The lad cracked three vertebrae when he fell at Northwood Lane, Clayton, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The Health & Safety Executive prosecuted.

He was working for his uncle at Storm Roofing Services Ltd during the 2014 summer holidays when the incident occurred.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 6(2) and 6(3) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. It was fined £14,000 and ordered to pay costs of £6,919.
