Salini Impregilo wins €770m Qatar stadium

8 Jul 15 Salini Impregilo has signed a contract for the construction of the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor, 50km north of Qatar’s capital Doha.

The stadium  - a venue for the FIFA World Cup Qatar - will be built under a contract worth €770m (£546m), of which €716m is for construction and over €53m for operation and maintenance.

Salini Impregilo, in joint venture with Galfar and Cimolai, beat competitors from France, Austria, India, and Asia in an international competition that lasted several months before arriving at the shortlist and the final choice.

The project was awarded by the governmental foundation Aspire Zone which is responsible for the development of sports infrastructure in the country. It involves the construction of a stadium that can accommodate 70,000 spectators, as well as an auxiliary building.

The project is said to be inspired to the Bayt Al Sha'ar, the black and white tent traditionally used by nomadic people in the territory of Qatar, which is seen as symbol of hospitality for the desert travellers.
