Samsung replaced on Qatar Rail scheme

9 May 16 A new contractor is to take over the construction of two major stations on Qatar Rail’s Doha Metro project.

Qatar Rail has appointed Consolidated Contractors SAL (CCC) to continue with the major stations project, taking over in 14 days’ time from the SOQ JV of Samsung, OHL and QBC. The team had won the design and build contract in June 2013. The contract was valued at about US$1.4bn (£970m), made up of US$500m for civil engineering and the rest for electromechanical and architectural work.

Qatar Rail stated that it will take every step to protect its rights and believes that its decision was made on solid contractual grounds. It said that it was doing all it could to minimise any delays and risks to this part of the Doha Metro project. Work will continue on the major stations project sites as planned and discussions are under way with the subcontractors to ensure continuity.

The major stations project involves the construction of Msheireb and Education City stations on the Doha Metro. Qatar Rail recently announced that its tunnelling activity was around 90% complete and that the overall Doha Metro project was nearing 40% completion.
