Skanska to renovate Helsinki Olympic Stadium

13 Feb 17 Skanska has won a SEK1.5bn (£130.5m) contract to renovate the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland.

The renovated stadium will be a multifunctional arena that will host both sports and cultural events.

Construction of the stadium began in 1934 and it was inaugurated in 1938. The Olympic Games were supposed to take place in Helsinki in 1940, but WWII meant that they were not held there until 1952.  

The contract with the city of Helsinki includes total renovation of the seating arrangements and running tracks as well as the construction of roofs to cover all of the stands and terraces. Underground, there will be new sports, gym and maintenance. The amount of restaurant and restroom facilities will be significantly increased.

In total, there will be about 19,300m2 of new facilities constructed, and the entire scope of the project is about 90,000m2.



Construction will begin this quarter and the project is expected to be completed in 2019.
