Strabag wins contract for 100km desert road in Oman

2 Dec 13 Oman’s Ministry of Transport & Communication has awarded Strabag a contract worth €88m (£73m) to build a 100km road that runs mostly across desert.

The contract, which will be carried out by Strabag Oman, is for the second section of the 400km-long road between the city of Sinaw and the industrial zone in Duqm in southern Oman.

“The new road is being built next to the existing old roadway,” said Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel. “With 90% of the road passing through desert-like terrain, the project presents an enormous challenge in terms of the procurement of construction materials and logistics.

The new carriageway will be asphalt-paved and will consist of one lane of traffic and one emergency lane per direction. Construction will require 4.2 million cubic metres of earthworks as well as the installation of about 60,000m3 of concrete for the dewatering system. Construction will start in January 2014 and is expected to last 24 months.
