Three killed in Johannesburg bridge collapse

15 Oct 15 Engineers from the city of Johannesburg in South Africa suspect that 'a gust of wind in the area' led to a bridge collapse that killed three people yesterday.

However the contractor Murray & Roberts said that the cause has not yet been determined. Its senior directors went to the scene, assisting the city of Johannesburg team and emergency services."The company’s immediate priority is to ensure those involved are taken care of," it said in a statement.

The bridge support structure collapsed onto the M1 motorway. The structure had been erected to enable the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the M1.

Two people were initially confirmed to have died, with three others trapped. A third death was later reported.
