Tourists panic as cracks appear in 400m-high glass walkway

30 May 14 A family visiting a viewing deck at the top of Chicago's tallest tower had a terrifying experience this week when the glass floor that was the only thing between them and the ground, 400 metres below, appeared to crack.

The Garibay family from California was on the glass 'Ledge' on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower when they heard a cracking sound and saw splintering of the glass.

Fortunately, it later turned out to be only the deck's protective coating that had cracked and the three-inch structural glass remained intact.

The Ledge was temporarily closed while the coating was replaced and a full inspection was carried out. The rest of the Skydeck visitor area remained open.
