Tunnel connection contract awarded for Stockholm bypass

3 Jul 15 Skanska has been appointed by the Swedish Transport Administration to build the southern connection of the Stockholm Bypass tunnel.

The SEK1.3bn (£99m) contract covers about 350m of tunnel with two lanes in each direction together with southbound connections and a new interchange.

Construction will start in the spring of 2016, with expected completion in 2021. About 150 people will work in the project, which will be carried out as a turnkey contract.

The Stockholm Bypass - Förbifart Stockholm – is a new route taking the E4 European highway past the Swedish capital. It will connect the southern and northern parts of Stockholm county, relieving arterial roads and the inner city of traffic. A new link west of Stockholm has been under investigation for several decades and many alternatives have been studied. To reduce the impact, just over 18km of the total 21km of the link are in tunnels.
