Turkey prepares for bidding on world’s largest solar plant

24 Oct 16 The Turkish government has said that it will tender a 1,000MW solar power plant in December.

The plant is poised to be the largest of its kind in the world, the government said.

Completion of the plant in Konya's Karapınar district is due by the end of 2018, said energy and natural resources minister Berat Albayrak.

China, the USA and several European countries are expected to compete in the tender, which is set to attract more than US$1bn-worth of investment to Konya. The plant will be constructed on a 2,000ha site and will produce enough electricity to feed more than 600,000 houses.

Albayrak said that, in order for a bid to be successful, companies will have to install a photovoltaic manufacturing facility of minimum 500MW annual capacity. There are also plans that products could be exported in the future.

Turkey is also set to hold a tender for a similar-sized project in wind energy in the first quarter of 2017.
