Two more Irish distilleries to get go-ahead

15 May 13 Ireland’s environment minister Alex Attwood is to recommend planning approval for two whiskey distilleries in County Down.

“These distilleries will provide a boost for the Ards Peninsula which will be welcomed by traders and visitors,” said Attwood. “These will provide construction jobs in the short term and attract visitors and increase tourism once completed.”

The approvals follow another last week in Derry and the award of a contract for a new distillery for William Grant & Sons in County Offaly.

One of the new applications is for an Irish whiskey distillery plus visitor’s centre in Kircubbin. The proposal includes the conversion of the Grade B1 listed stable building. The U-Shaped two-storey building will be converted into a visitor’s centre and the building will also house two units of staff accommodation.

The  other application is for a micro distillery including a new building in Portaferry.
