The Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre in St Dennis finally cleared all planning hurdles after legal challenges last year. It is now expected to be operational in 2016.

Pre-engineering and construction works for haul and access roads began back in 2011 and Vinci has long been Sita’s preferred contractor for the project.

Plans for the 240,000 tonne-a-year capacity facility were rejected by Cornwall County Council in 2009 but then approved on appeal by communities secretary Eric Pickles in 2011. Further legal challenges followed but were ultimately thrown out.

Sita has a 30-year PFI deal with what is now the unitary Cornwall Council manage residual household waste and recycling, in a deal valued at £1.1bn.
