Vinci team wins €2bn final phase of Qatar light rail

24 Jun 14 QDVC has won a €2bn (£1.6bn) contract for the final works phase of the Lusail LRT in Qatar.

This design-build contract will be built by QDVC in a consortium with Alstom. QDVC is a 51% Qatari Diar and 49% Vinci Construction Grands Projets subsidiary and the award of the contract for the final phase follows wins in 2007 and 2011 for earlier phases.

The new contract involves construction of 25 stations and a depot, architectural and electro-mechanical works packages and integrated project management. Alstom's €750 work involves provision of 35 trains equipped with catenary-free technology, track-laying, energy supply and telecommunications as well as control systems. The light rail system is scheduled to begin operating in 2018 (yellow line) and 2020 (green, red and purple lines).

The city of Lusail is a new urban development with population of 200,000 and is located north of Doha, the capital of Qatar.

QDVC completed the civil engineering works on the first phases of the infrastructure - including 7km of tunnels and seven underground and four above-ground stations - and is currently building the Pearl station, which will connect the Lusail light rail with the Doha metro system, also under construction.
