The contract for the Brooke Mead Extra Care Housing development, worth nearly £12m, was awarded through Scape Group’s major works framework. Completion is due in 2017.

The scheme is on Albion Street in Brighton, on the site of former council-owned sheltered housing. This will be demolished to make way for the new flats, which are primarily targeted at people with low to moderate dementia.

Willmott Dixon says that nearly 25% of its residential construction activity is in the care and retirement sector, with local authorities and housing associations investing significantly in accommodation for over 55s.

This is the contractor’s first scheme for Brighton & Hove City Copuncil although its interiors division is working on a £20m upgrade in the city to the university’s Cockcroft building.
