WSP and Aurecon win role on $1.6bn Queensland highway

28 Oct 15 Spanish contracting JV Nexus Infrastructure has picked a team of Aurecon and WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff for the design of the AU$1.6bn (£755m) Toowoomba Second Range Crossing project in Queensland, Australia.

The Aurecon and WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff joint venture was appointed by Nexus Infrastructure, which is made up of Acciona and Ferrovial.

The 41km project is aimed at improving the efficiency of freight traffic and will also improve the safety of commuters by removing heavy freight vehicles from the Toowoomba central business district.

Work for the design joint venture includes earthworks, structures - including an 800m-long viaduct – drainage and flooding hydrology, road design and environmental services. A 30m-deep cutting will be constructed as an alternative to the tunnel solution that had been included in the reference design in order that all heavy vehicles, including ones carrying dangerous goods, can use the new route.

The project is due for completion in 2018, weather permitting.
