Birmingham seeks bidders for £70m road and air scheme

26 Aug 11 The tender process has started for two related schemes to extend the runway at Birmingham Airport and carry out improvements to the A45 at a total cost of up to £70m.

Although each job has a different client, the procurement aims to explore savings from appointing a single contractor to deliver both.

Birmingham City Council, on behalf of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, intends to upgrade 2km of the A45 dual carriageway adjacent to the airport. The new road will include an upgraded carriageway and allow future accommodation of public transportation infrastructure. The cost is put at £28m to £35m.

At the same time Birmingham Airport intends to extend its existing runway by approximately 400m. The extension of the runway and associated infrastructure will also require other work including a new taxiway exit, the treatment of obstacles and the diversion of services and watercourses. This too is costed at £28m to £35m.

The third lot being tendered combines the road and runway schemes.

The contract will be let through a competitive dialogue procedure, with a maximum of four participants for each lot. The deadline for prequalifiation responses is noon on 26 September.
