£200m expansion plan at London City Airport

20 Sep 13 London City Airport has submitted a planning application for a £200m infrastructure expansion.

It wants to build new airplane parking stands to accommodate larger aircraft, a parallel taxi lane to get more runway capacity and an extension to the terminal building.

It is not proposing a second runway, or any extension to the existing runway.

The aim is to increase capacity from its current 70,000 flight movements a year to 120,000 (take offs and landings).  This traffic level is already permitted under an application granted in 2009.

The proposals will also allow the airport to double its passenger numbers from three million to six million over the next 10 years.

The planning application has been submitted to the London Borough of Newham.
