United House Developments has been selected by registered social landlord Poplar Housing & Regeneration Community Association (HARCA) for the regeneration of the Chrisp Street area in Poplar.

Chrisp Street Market is a purpose-built market square with a distinctive clock tower, designed for the Festival of Britain in 1951 by Fredrick Gibberd. It will be transformed with new homes, shops, and community facilities.

Approximately 750 new homes will be developed, along with approximately 250,000 sq ft of mainly retail space, with plans for a new supermarket and cinema complex, cultural, community and new public spaces, focused around the Market Square.

United House Developments will work with Poplar HARCA on public consultation, with the aim of submitting a planning application before the end of the year.

Poplar HARCA director of development Neal Hunt said: “We believe in United House Developments we have selected a partner who can successfully take forward a key part of the regeneration of the Poplar area. We believe as partners we can build on the current success of Chrisp Street ensuring that the local character is not lost whilst making the area long-term sustainable.”

United House Developments chief executive Rick de Blaby said: “The combination of the site’s history, the rapidly changing nature of the area, the great things Poplar HARCA are already doing elsewhere within their portfolio locally, the scale of the opportunity and the fact that we also have plans for the nearby Balfron Tower make this a very special opportunity for United House Developments.”
