Amey takes £2bn Sheffield highways deal

12 Apr 12 Sheffield City Council has picked Amey as preferred bidder for its £2bn ‘Streets Ahead’ highways maintenance project, starting in August 2012.

Under the PFI deal, Amey will take responsibility for improving and maintaining the city’s 1,900km of road, 3,300km of footway, 36,000 highway trees, 500 traffic signals, 68,000 street lights, over 18,000 items of street furniture and 12,700 street name plates.

The contract, which runs for 25 years, will also include services such as street cleaning, winter gritting and landscape maintenance.

Amey was selected ahead of Carillion and Mouchel.

Amey chief executive Mel Ewell said: “We’re extremely excited about delivering a major overhaul of Sheffield City Council’s road assets bringing them up to standard appropriate of a modern European city. We look forward to using our knowledge, experience and skills across our multi-faceted organisation to improve the city’s highway infrastructure for the benefit of all those who use it.

Up to 500 Sheffield City Council staff will TUPE over to Amey once the contract starts. Some 170 additional jobs are also expected to be created, including more than 30 apprentices and graduate trainees.

Council chief executive John Mothersole said: "The project is a once in a lifetime opportunity to refurbish the roads, pavements and streetscene across the whole city and is a key priority for Sheffield City Council. We will continue to work closely with Amey over the coming months to ensure they are fully geared up to begin the improvement works on the highway network later in the year."
