Arup team wins contract for Canberra light rail

24 Feb 14 Australia's Capital Metro Agency has taken the next step in bringing light rail to Canberra, with the appointment of an Arup-led consortium to deliver technical advice.

The team also includes Hassell and Parsons Brinckerhoff alongside local specialist consultants Brown Consulting, LandData Surveys, Phillip Chun Access, SLR Consulting, GML Heritage and dsb Landscape Architects. The Arup-led consortium beat three other groups bidding for the contract.

"This critical piece of work will give us a detailed understanding of, and a preferred approach to, the project's technical elements including engineering, design, construction, operations, urban design, maintenance, network integration, sustainability, land development and safety management," said Australian Capital Territory minister for the environment and sustainable development Simon Corbell.

“We received four credible submissions and I congratulate the Arup-led consortium for putting forward a proposal that aligned well with our vision for the project, while demonstrating a detailed understanding of Canberra and how they would engage local skills to support their work," he added. "The members of this consortium have very recent and relevant experience doing similar work for current and planned light rail systems in Sydney, Perth, the Gold Coast and South Australia, in addition to many notable international light rail developments. We look forward to using their learnings to help deliver a truly transformative light rail system in Canberra,"

This work will be delivered in phases before being completed in the second half of this year, in line with the plan to start building the light rail system in 2016.
