Mr Shanker was most recently project director in Network Rail’s infrastructure projects team. He has led complex M&E projects, including the introduction of high speed factory track construction trains, modular switches and the electrification upgrade of the West Coast Mainline.

At Balfour Beatty he is expected to focus on broadening BBES’ portfolio of projects, the development of its ‘Modular Systems+’ mechanical and electrical modular construction business and improving BBES operational and design capabilities. He will be driving efforts to get building information modelling techniques used on all schemes.

Mr Shanker will report to BBES managing director Phil McGuire.

BBES had a turnover of £260m in 2013. It has 1200 employees, with 500 office-based staff and 700 operatives.

Its Modular Systems+ business provides products ranging from small components to fully packaged plant rooms, produced at an in-house manufacturing facility in Wednesbury in the West Midlands where it employs 105 people.
