Balfour Beatty wins third contract at US campus

14 Feb 14 Balfour Beatty Construction has been appointed construction manager at-risk for renovations to a high-rise student residence at the University of North Carolina (UNC).

The Holshouser residence hall was built in 1973 at the University’s Charlotte campus. Its renovation will be Balfour Beatty Construction’s third project in recent years on the campus.

The scheme involves renovations to the 11-storey, 202-room residence hall, including upgrades to the elevator equipment, new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, full window replacements, a brick-clad façade on the exterior of the building, as well as new walkways and patios.

Holshouser Hall, which will features single and double rooms, will also include meeting rooms, lounge areas, and two apartments for advisors to the residents. The scope of work also includes significant asbestos abatement and demolition work.

The design team includes Clark, Nexsen, Owen, Barbieri & Gibson, with civil engineering services provided by Stewart Engineering.

In 2013, Balfour Beatty Construction was selected in a joint-venture partnership with Metcon to build UNC Charlotte’s new freshman residence hall, which is located adjacent to Holshouser Hall. Balfour Beatty Construction also previously completed the University’s Student Union, which has served the  community since 2009.

With a construction start date targeted for May, the latest project is expected to be handed over for student occupancy in the summer of 2015.
