Besix and Theiss win breakwater contract

30 Jan 12 A joint venture between Australia's Thiess and Belgian contractor Besix has won a AU$260m (£175m) contract to develop a breakwater and materials offloading facility.

The work is for Chevron-operated Wheatstone project, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) and domestic gas project in Western Australia.

The JV is responsible for the design and construction of the project’s breakwater and materials operating facility near Onslow in the State’s north-west. The project will create more than 300 jobs and work is due to start on site later this year.

“This partnership creates a new specialist marine capability to support the booming LNG sector and continues our involvement in the industry, and the productive and ongoing relationship with Chevron Australia,” said Thiess managing director Bruce Munro.

The contract is Thiess’ second win on the Wheatstone project as it had previously secured a microtunnelling contract direct with Chevron. The contract for the breakwater and  materials handing facility is with Bechtel, which is delivering the work packages for Chevron.
Thiess is currently completing two contracts for Chevron on the Gorgon LNG Project at Barrow Island including the design and construction of the accommodation village, and construction of the site preparation and temporary facilities.
