Challenges for Prime on £11m Bear Gardens project

18 Mar 14 Prime, the construction arm of Elliott Thomas Group, has been named principal contractor on an £11.3m apart-hotel development in London’s Bankside.

The Bear Gardens project involves the design and build of 71 apartments across nine storeys, right next to the headquarters of the Health & Safety Executive at Rose Court.

Prime will demolish the existing Empire Warehouse while retaining the external facades of 1 and 2 Bear Gardens, and constructing the shell, core and associated plant rooms.

Located between the Globe Theatre and the Rose Theatre (preserved under the adjacent Rose Court), the project is in an area of archaeological interest. The name ‘Bear Gardens’ originates from the bear baiting pit that existed in the 19th Century on the site where this development will soon be constructed. The area is surrounded by tourist destinations and narrow cobbled streets, that present logistical challenges, the contractor said.

Prime managing director Jim Tolputt said: “Although this is a Prime Construction contract, we recognise that this win is testament to the expertise and experience of the entire group.  Because the site is tucked away in a tight space behind the Globe theatre, our background in logistics and previous work in central London make us well-placed to excel on this job.”
