Centrepiece of the town’s makeover, branded Better Barnsley, will be a new town square and a £4m central library. Shop buildings will be refurbished and the Metropolitan Centre market buildings will be remodelled and extended.
Completion is scheduled for 2017.
This is not the first time the council has brought forward ambitious plans for the town but it says construction work will now start this year. It has published a contract notice in the Official Journal of the EU advertising for a construction contractor
A development agreement with the 1249 Regeneration Partnership for a retail-led scheme was terminated in January 2014.
