D&B contract let for $923m Australian highway

17 Sep 16 A joint venture of Fulton Hogan and Seymour Whyte has won the detailed design and construction contract for a AU$929.3m (£526.6m) Australian highway project following a ‘double early contractor involvement’ (dECI) process.

Queensland Department of Transport & Main Roads has awarded the contract for the Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway section of the Bruce Highway Upgrade after working collaboratively with Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte Joint Venture and the Infrastructure Group from November 2015. Both teams developed their tenders under the dECI process, working independently to prepare workable designs. The client said that the interactive tender process has ensured the best value outcomes and most suitable design layout has been chosen for the project.

The project involves an upgrade of the highway to six lanes, including major upgrades to the interchanges at each end of the project. Long distance traffic will be separated from local traffic movements, allowing the highway to function as a high-speed, high-volume corridor.

Preliminary construction is expected to start in late 2016 in preparation for major construction in mid-2017. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2020, weather permitting.
