Dubai launches development of smart city

11 Mar 14 The authority developing the Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) free-zone technology park has launched the area’s first integrated smart city project.

The 150,000m2 Silicon Park will be built at a cost of AED1.1bn (£179.5m) and the project is due for completion by the fourth quarter of 2017. The project is in line with a vision to transform Dubai into ‘the smartest city in the world’ over the course of the next three years.

The Silicon Park project comprises 97,000m2 of office space, 25,000m2 of commercial space, 20,000m2 of residential area, and a hotel in addition to facilities such as restaurants, health and fitness centres.

Silicon Park is characterised by its buildings topped with green roofs, which will include plants and trees that require minimal irrigation and utilise the direct sunlight on the buildings. The project is designed to optimise renewable energy resources and achieve efficiency in energy consumption.

Additionally, it will also feature smart lighting systems with motion sensor systems that respond to traffic and individuals. The smart street lighting columns will be equipped with digital signboards that can be remotely controlled through an application. The project will also implement advanced technologies to support controlling water consumption through recycling procedures at homes and offices for re-use in irrigation.

As a smart community, Silicon Park will feature systems from charging-docks for smart devices on the street to smart pop-up furniture and digital play tables.

Dr Mohammed Alzarooni, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, said: "The project provides the best solutions and systems in information and communications technology and includes all the equipment that makes it a model for future smart cities. It also reflects the readiness of Dubai to adopt the latest innovative technological solutions. Development projects can be described as ‘smart’ when they can provide a quality living and work environment and a wise management of natural resources. The “Silicon Park” project is a true example of what the future will be like in live-work environments connected to the internet and smart applications.”

Dubai Silicon Oasis is a wholly owned entity of the Dubai government and operates as a free zone technology park for the semiconductor, microelectronic and other high technology-based companies looking to set up their regional headquarters and research and development facilities in the Middle East and North Africa region.
