The fire is believed to have been caused by burning of piles of electrical wiring under the bridge.
State governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for Fulton County following the incident.
“The state is mobilising all available resources to ensure public safety and minimise disruption of traffic as we continue emergency response efforts,” said Deal.
