Five set to compete for $5.5bn Melbourne tunnel

10 May 16 Tendering is now under way for Melbourne’s second river crossing - the Western Distributor - with five teams lined up to bid for the AU$5.5bn (£2.8bn) project.

The project includes about 10 distinct elements, including a tunnel under Yarraville and a bridge over the Maribyrnong River.

Full funding for the Western Distributor project was confirmed two weeks ago in the Victoria state budget. Premier Daniel Andrews, minister for roads Luke Donnellan and Transurban CEO Scott Charlton said that international constructors are expected to bid on the Western Distributor, after an extensive market engagement process.

The firms that have been invited to express interest are:

  • John Holland and CPB Contractors Joint Venture
  • Lendlease and Bouygues Joint Venture
  • Rizzani De Eccher Australia
  • Bechtel Infrastructure Australia
  • Salini Impregilo

An updated reference design will be developed in response to the ongoing community and stakeholder consultation, and will be released mid-year in time for the next stage of the tender process.

The expressions of interest process for the Western Distributor closes at 5pm on 26 May. Construction will start in late 2017 and the project will be completed in 2022.
