Go-ahead given for Texas nuclear reactors

11 Feb 16 The USA’s Nuclear Regulatory Commission has given the go-ahead for licences to be issued for a nuclear project in Texas.

The agency’s Office of New Reactors can now issue two combined licences (COLs) for Nuclear Innovation North America’s (NINA) South Texas project site.

The licences will authorice NINA to build and operate two advanced boiling water reactors (ABWR) at the site near Bay City, Texas. The South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company already operates two reactors at the site.

Several conditions will be imposed on the licence, including specific actions associated with the agency’s post-Fukushima requirements for mitigation strategies and spent fuel pool instrumentation.
