Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said that the extra money was needed because the heavy winter rains had caused more than usual road damage.
Support for councils to fix the roads most damaged by severe weather will be increased by £36.5m, to £80m.
On top of this, an extra £103.5m is also being made available to all English councils to supplement the existing £900m allocated by central government for road maintenance this year.
This additional money will be allocated on a formula basis, and will be distributed to the majority of councils in England by the end of this week. The DfT is keen to see the councils accelerate repair work to get it completed by July, before the summer holidays.
To qualify for this extra funding, local authorities must commit to publishing information on their websites by the end of August 2014 showing where the money has been spent.
