Greenland to get new container port

27 Feb 15 Nuuk in Greenland is to get a new 60,000m2 container port following the appointment of Ramboll as designer and Per Aarsleff as contractor.

Ramboll has five months to design the new container port, which will be built on a site with no previous land or sea infrastructure. This calls for power cabling and connection, 360m of quayside, dredging of the port basin and construction of 4,700m2 of port facilities Some 300,000m3 of mountainside will also have to be removed to make way for a suitable construction site.

“We have set up a dedicated 20-man project team consisting of engineers with expert knowledge of port design, heavy-duty pavements, utilities, as well as professionals with local insight and stakeholder access from our Nuuk office,” said Morten Thorhauge Boolsen, head the ports and geo structures department at Ramboll.

The entire team will be located in the same office for the duration of the design project to ensure knowledge sharing and cross-disciplinary collaboration, he said. “To optimise our collaboration with the contractor, the design manager from Per Aarsleff will also be part-time at the project office. With so many disciplines involved in one project, it’s essential that we play off each other’s strengths.”
